I have also experience it on my system and really confused as to why we are getting these messages. Nothing has changed on the computers.. no new software (except for ms updates) or even hardware. the systems that these machines are getting the DEP message are Windows XP SP3... the users who are running w2k have not called me on this so i don't think they are having this issue just those who are running XP SP3. What can i do to stop this besides turning DEP off? DEP Completely on Windows XP. November 16th, 2010 | Author: Robert What is DEP (Data Excecution Prevention) And How to Disable it Completely on Windows XP. Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a set of hardware and software technologies that perform additional checks on memory to help prevent malicious code from running on a system. In Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, DEP is enforced by hardware and by software. The primary benefit of DEP is to help prevent code execution from data pages. Typically, code is not executed from the default heap and the stack. Hardware-enforced DEP detects code that is running from these locations and raises an exception when execution occurs. Software-enforced DEP can help prevent malicious code from taking advantage of exception-handling mechanisms in Windows. Above explanation from Microsoft Support KB. This guide will disable DEP completely. 1.) Click “Start”. 2.) Click “Control Panel”. 3.) Double click the “System” icon. 4.) Click the “Advanced” tab. 5.) Click the “Settings” tab under “Start up and Recovery”. 6.) Click “Edit” under System Start-up. This will launch the Boot.ini file in to Notepad. 7.) Locate “/noexecute=Optin”. 8.) Edit this entry with “/noexecute=AwaysOff” without the quotation marks. 9.) In the notepad tool bar click “File” and then “Save”. 10.) Click “Ok” to close the dialog box 11.) Click “Ok” to close the Systems Properties box. 12.) Restart your computer. You may find the computer will take a while longer to start the first time and may even restart automatically. You now have disabled DEP completely. Verifying DEP is disabled. 1.) Click “Start”. 2.) Click “Control Panel”. 3.) Click the “System” icon. 4.) Select the “Advanced” tab. 5.) Click the “Settings” tab under Performance and Maintenance. 6.) Click “Data Execution Prevention”. 7.) The DEP settings should now not be available to you. 8.) Keep selecting “Ok” to close all boxes. I do not advise you to do this procedure as disabling DEP is not recommended. Disabling DEP would be the last alternative, I would prefer to find and fix the problem you are having without disabling DEP. A Windows error is an error that happens when an unexpected condition occurs or when a desired operation has failed. When you have an error in Windows, it may be critical and cause your programs to freeze and crash or it may be seemingly harmless yet annoying.
A stop error screen or bug check screen, commonly called a blue screen of death (also known as a BSoD, bluescreen), is caused by a fatal system error and is the error screen displayed by the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems upon encountering a critical error, of a non-recoverable nature, that causes the system to "crash".
One of the biggest causes of DLL's becoming corrupt/damaged is the practice of constantly installing and uninstalling programs. This often means that DLL's will get overwritten by newer versions when a new program is installed, for example. This causes problems for those applications and programs that still need the old version to operate. Thus, the program begins to malfunction and crash.
Computer hanging or freezing occurs when either a program or the whole system ceases to respond to inputs. In the most commonly encountered scenario, a program freezes and all windows belonging to the frozen program become static. Almost always, the only way to recover from a system freeze is to reboot the machine, usually by power cycling with an on/off or reset button.
Once your computer has been infected with a virus, it's no longer the same. After removing it with your anti-virus software, you're often left with lingering side-effects. Technically, your computer might no longer be infected, but that doesn't mean it's error-free. Even simply removing a virus can actually harm your system.
Reimage repairs and replaces all critical Windows system files needed to run and restart correctly, without harming your user data. Reimage also restores compromised system settings and registry values to their default Microsoft settings. You may always return your system to its pre-repair condition.
