to boot on "Voice" VLAN. A DHCP ACK Error message is displayed on the phone and it infinitely loops on the Voice VLAN. However, statically addressing phone works just fine. error phone no ack miracle box Environment: MS Server 2003 DHCP Server Avaya IP Telephone Firmware 2.1.3 or higher Extreme Networks Summit 300-24 PoE Switches with DHCP Relay enabled Phones and DHCP Server on different subnets Resolution: DHCP Server was on the "Data" VLAN, but also had "Voice" VLAN assigned to its port tagged. Remove all tagged VLANs on DHCP server port. In this configuration they avaya 9608 dhcp options are unnecessary, as DHCP relay takes care of address assignment. How did you figure it out?: Ethereal traces on both the phone and DHCP server ultimately pointed out the problem. Low level things like CRC errors and Tx and Rx errors on the port were ruled out early. Statically addressing the phones worked fine so IP forwarding in the Extreme switches was not the problem. Bad Packet Flow was as follows: 1. Phone Sends out Tagged DHCP Request which immediately reaches the DHCP Server 2. DHCP Relay Agent sends out unicast DHCP Request for the phone which reaches the DHCP server second 3. DHCP does not like that it received tagged DHCP request and immediately responds with DHCP NAK packet. 4. DHCP server then sends DHCP ACK back to the relay agent for the IP Telephone. The problem is that this is a race condition. The phone gets the NAK back first because the DHCP saw it's Voice VLAN tagged request first and immediately responds. Some of my IP phones come up using DHCP fine, and thers will continuously loop with the DHCP Ack error. I've gone in a cleared the phones using the Mute - Clear sequence. I am avaya phone having trouble getting the phone to receive a DHCP packet on the voice vlan. The phones will boot up, talk on the data vlan and then try to talk on the voice vlan. I have watched in wireshark and have seen them do DHCP discoveries on the voice vlan, receive an offer, and then they keeping doing discoveries. It is like they ignore or avaya phone dhcp do not see the offers. On the VLANTEST DHCP setting, I can set that to 60 seconds and after time runs out, the phone will eventually figure it out somehow and then will start working.
